In addition to the majestic display which will begin on Thursday July 29th with the arrival of 40+ world-class Tall Ships from all over the globe, the city will be a flutter of activity through to Natal Day Monday, August 2nd when we see them off with the Parade of Sail (2:00 pm start). More than 700,000 people are expected to visit the harbourfront for Tall Ships Challenge 2004: A Salute to l’Acadie - themed for the World Acadian Congress.
Choose the Smart and Most Efficient Way to Travel As there is very limited parking in downtown Halifax, and we are expecting very large crowds, using Metro Transit's ferry or bus service to come to the waterfront is stongly encouraged to help prevent major unwanted traffic congestion.

Metro Transit's Access-A-Bus service will also operate on an enhanced level of service for Friday and Saturday. On Sunday and Monday, service will operate on enhanced holiday service. Access-A-Bus will accept non-registered user requests, for persons in wheelchairs only, for the Friday, Saturday & Sunday (July 30th, 31st, and Aug. 1st) and it will be on a first come first serve basis. These customers will be required to book the same as our registered users would, by calling the scheduling line at 490-6999 then pressing #1. Accessible drop-off areas will be at Pier 20 as well as the foot of Salter Street. There is no parking however. Accessible parking and loading zones throughout the downtown area core will be strictly enforced. They will be kept open and policed, available on a first-come, first-served basis. The waterfront area for viewing the Tall Ships is generally accessible to wheelchair users, and washroom facilities will be available on site. The Tenacious tall ship vessel will be accessible during their regular viewing hours of 10:00 am - 5:00 pm and a volunteer will be on site to assist with boarding. A designated wheelchair viewing area will be set up only during the Parade of Sail on Monday afternoon, August 2nd at the southern most end of the waterfront boardwalk. Drop off at Ocean Terminal, 1215 Marginal Road, at the entrance to the harbourwalk. Viewing area is limited, first-come, first served. If possible, persons in wheelchairs are advised to visit the site during the early morning, to avoid the crowds and heat. Street Closures / No Parking
Please note the following street closures in the downtown core during the festivities (refer to map below as indicated by markings):
*Additionally, on Monday from 8:00 am through until after the Parade of Sail (approx. 6-7 pm), the following streets will be closed to vehicular traffic: (The general public may access these areas, however, not by vehicle. Residents only of these streets will have special access with their vehicles.)
There is a designated area for Inner-Provincial and out of province Charter Tour Buses to drop off passengers and park their buses for the day. Tour buses may drop off their passengers at the Woodside Ferry Terminal (off Pleasant St., at Atlantic, which is at the Eastern Passage end of the Circumferential Highway in Dartmouth, then turn right) at which point they can enjoy a scenic 10 minute ferry ride across the harbour to Halifax (which does offer the best view!). Regular fares apply (Adult $1.75, Senior and Children $1.25) and there will be a concession stand where single transit tickets will be sold. The drivers may then park their buses across the street in the Woodside Industrial Park. There will be volunteer staff present at the Ferry Terminal to direct the buses. (Parking in the industrial park is restricted from No Parking areas, in private company parking lots, in front of fire hydrants and must not block roadways.) It is strongly recommended that tour buses go to the Dartmouth side to drop passengers off, as it is very important that we try and prevent unnecessary traffic congestion in the downtown core of Halifax. If however, a tour bus operator must enter the downtown Halifax area, they are asked to please drop off at the Casino Nova Scotia, 1983 Upper Water St., at which point they can arrange with staff a scheduled time to pick passengers back up later in the day. They may then proceed to park their buses at the following locations: East side of Novalea Dr. (between Young St. and Dartmouth Ave.), or the West side of Devonshire Ave., both of which are accessible by turning left from Barrington St. onto Devonshire Ave. and then left onto Young St. Halifax-Dartmouth Bridge Commission Events -Date Change The 22nd Annual Bridge Walk, for the first time ever, has moved its event date to Canada Day for this year only, due to the timing of the Tall Ships visit. So be sure to come on out on Thursday, July 1st, and partake in this fun-filled family walk across the Macdonald Bridge (from either side) and enjoy the various activities and entertainment between 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm (bridge will be closed from 1:00 - 5:00 pm.). And, if you come out early, you can check out the 10th Annual Bridge Mile (1:10 - 3:00 pm), or if interested in participating, you can register by going to the Halifax - Dartmouth Bridge Commission website. Special thanks also goes out to the Halifax-Dartmouth Bridge Commission for changing the dates of their annual events to allow the Macdonald Bridge to remain open during the very busy weekend of July 29 - August 2. Public Safety Facilities / Volunteers & Special Info./Lost & Found Booths Police, Fire and Emergency Medical Services will be available, and very visible on the waterfront and other Tall Ships event venues. There will be several Tall Ships volunteers along the waterfront as well as other key areas such as the Woodside and Alderney Ferry Terminals to assist with questions and directions. They will be easily recognized by the yellow Tall Ships t-shirts, and the khaki hats and shorts that they will be wearing. A lost & found / information booth will also be set up, situated centrally on the waterfront. And, there will be an Aliant "lost kids/child find" site at 1549 Lower Water Street, where Tug's Pub and the Waterfront Warehouse are located. Attention Boaters We certainly hope that boaters will come out and safely enjoy viewing the Tall Ships at their berths, as touring within the harbour is permitted, however all vessels must proceed at a safe speed (of no more than 8 knots) so as not to create a significant wake. Please do not approach berthed vessels too closely, as there will be a 30 metre buffer zone. During the Parade of Sail on Monday, August 2nd, boaters' access will be restricted within the harbour area, but there will be plenty of room for viewing the spectacle from the water. Check with your local club or the Tall Ships website (cbc.ca/tallships2004) or (novascotia.com/tallships) for more detail. |
