Sustainable Transportation in HRM

What is Transportation Demand Management (TDM)?

TDM is a set of strategic initiatives geared at improving the efficiency of the transportation network, encouraging alternatives to the single occupant vehicle trip and encouraging behavioural change.

Commuter trips are the most common trips in any city and cause the most pressure on the road network.  HRM is looking to target these trips in our desire to encourage the use of sustainable modes.  Providing infrastructure such as bicycle lanes and multi-use trails; transit service and on-line ridematching programs, are only part of what makes up a Transportation Demand Management program.  The other components include information sharing, data collection, working with workplaces and individuals, promotion and incentives.  This complete package is what makes up a TDM program and can lead to success.

HRM has been working on these programs for a number of years.  Information on the program can be found in our new newletter.  To see what is happening in HRM now please go to TDM Newsletter June 2010.To PDF Acrobat Tips
