Streets for Cycling Iniative
Pedestrian Footbridges
A similar alternative involves switching the
existing bikeway and pedway and providing footbridges for
pedestrians across to the bus island from the exit ramp and from the
bus island to the traffic island. The structures would improve
safety in the crossing areas. They would facilitate a transit
connection to the downtown, a direct connection to North Street for
pedestrians walking westbound and would link to Brunswick and
Gottingen Streets using the existing North Street crosswalks from
the bus and traffic islands.Cyclists would maintain improved access
to North and Brunswick Streets while avoiding the need to take the
more circuitous route around the exit ramp. Access to Barrington
Street is maintained on the North Street extension or one of several
alternatives presented in this discussion. While the footbridges may
have some architectural appeal if properly designed, there is a
potential for visual intrusion into residences on North Street. The
cost of this improvement would be high, and higher still if the
footbridges were designed for wheelchair accessibility.
