Landscaped area options

Another set of alternatives considered involves using the landscaped area south of the retaining wall, which runs parallel and south of the North Street Extension, as an extension of the Brunswick Street route.

The south side of the North Street Extension (left photo) runs from Barrington Street to Brunswick Street at North Street. The space is landscaped but can provide an access for cyclists from Barrington Street to Hamilton Lane or Brunswick Street and provides an alternative to the North Street Extension 'canyon' (right photo) with some relatively low cost preparation.

The existing slope from Barrington Street along North to Brunswick Street ranges between 10% and 11% over the approximately 95 meter distance and is similar to the slope of the back-filled area behind the retaining wall to which it is parallel. A rise of 9.5 meters over this distance exceeds the 5% recommended for bike paths.

The existing average grade from Barrington Street along North to Brunswick Street ranges between 10% and 11% over the approximately 95 meter distance.

There are two ancillary options for access to the proposed Brunswick Street cycle route via the landscaped area south of the retaining wall, parallel to the North Street extension.

Landscape area to Hamilton Lane option

Provide access to/from Brunswick Street via Hamilton Lane. This option involves constructing a step area or a cut from the landscaped area between the North Street Extension and Hamilton Lane. However, this would involve removing a parking area at the northern end of Hamilton Lane. In addition, the townhouses are situated on a narrow, cloistered cul-de-sac, and the path may disrupt the private nature of the lane.

Landscaped area to Brunswick Street

A two-way access along the landscaped area linking the cycle path at Barrington to the intersection of Brunswick and North Streets provides a better alternative than continuing the cycle dismount to Artz Street. It avoids disrupting the cloistered residential area in Hamilton Lane. This option retains a two-way bikeway on the north side of the bridge and a two-way pedway on the south side.
