CYCLING
Streets for Cycling Iniative

Multi-use Paths

The 'side switching' options can be expanded to include multi-use paths on both sides of the bridge. Two variations of this theme are discussed.

The pedway and bikeway currently on opposite sides of the bridge can be realigned to permit two way pedestrian and wheelchair use on both sides of the bridge. Cyclists would travel eastbound on the north side and westbound on the south side. This removes the risk of a head on bike collisions which exists if the two way bikeway was maintained. However a separation barrier between pedestrian traffic and cyclists is not feasible due to the narrow path width, there is a risk of pedestrians/bike collisions at speed on downhill grades.Without further alterations to the north side exit ramp, cyclists would continue to have inconvenient access from North and Brunswick Streets to the bikeway. However westbound cyclists would enjoy better access to Brunswick Street and westbound North Street using the crosswalks. Pedestrians could use the path closest to the outer railing on both sides permitting stopping or leisurely strolling to enjoy the view. Pedestrians and wheel chair users could chose the more convenient side of the bridge according to their destinations. The option to walk their bikes is present if cyclists wish to backtrack.

Two way pedestrian traffic on both sides of the bridge is indicated with the double blue arrows. Red arrows indicate the direction of one way cycle traffic on either side of the bridge. Reversing the flow and adding stairs with a rail for walking bikes improves accessibility westbound on North Street.

Maintaining westbound cycle traffic on the bridge's north side and eastbound cycle traffic on the south side reverses the flow of traffic from the first 'multi-use' alternative. This option continues to service pedestrian traffic on both sides. Adding stairs, with a rail for walking bikes, in order to link the bikeway directly to the North Street Annex slip road improves accessibility to westbound North Street and allows access to the North Street crosswalks leading to Brunswick Street for both cyclists and pedestrians using the north side.
