CYCLING
Streets for Cycling Iniative

Pedway/Bikeway Side Switching

The main advantage to switching the bikeway to the south side of the bridge is that it improves accessibility to the planned Brunswick Street cycle route to the downtown and to cyclists wishing to continue westbound on North Street. Cyclists exit or enter on to the bridge on the same side and closer to Brunswick Street, using the crosswalks already in place. One possible constraint is the potentially abrupt halt at the bottom of the descending gradient just before the Southside crosswalk on the new access ramp. Cyclists continuing west on North Street can use the crosswalks and then remount. Eastbound cyclists from both streets can directly join the bikeway without negotiating a steep grade. Pedestrians would walk on the North side. It would be possible to create a crosswalk to the bus island on the exit loop providing transit access to downtown and more convenient access to westbound North Street. Pedestrians continuing to Dockyard and Shipyard locations retain the advantage of the crosswalk on Barrington Street. However, pedestrians wishing to use Brunswick Street to walk downtown would have circuitous access and egress and wheelchair users would have similar disadvantages to pedestrians.
