CYCLING
Streets for Cycling Iniative
Zig-Zag Option
It is possible to provide a 'zigzag' ramp from
the end of the bikeway up the toe slope of the new on-ramp to meet
with the south side pedestrian crosswalks leading to Brunswick
Street. This option completes the link for cyclists using the
Brunswick Street route. In addition it clearly defines the path to
the existing bikeway from Brunswick and North Streets. It provides
an attractive alternative to the North Street Extension slip road
running between Brunswick and Barrington Streets, which has several
blind spots, caused by the roads' curve and high retaining
walls.

Zigzag
option on toe slope shown in red
The toe slope area could be further landscaped and a 'parkette'
created, providing continuity as an urban link in the Trans Canada Trail System
now terminating at the existing bikeway dismount/remount area.Maintenance could
be provided by HRM at low cost. However, in the winter, maintenance vehicles may
have some difficulty keeping the 'zigzag' ramp clear of snow with the sharp
turning movements required along its' path. Furthermore, the toe slope's
steepness and lateral dimensions suggest that the ramp would require several
sharp angled turns in order to achieve a comfortable and safe cycling
grade. While this option clearly defines a Brunswick Street link, which is
desirable, it does not improve access for North Street westbound cycle traffic.
