Streets for Cycling Iniative
Phase I
The traditional grid pattern of Peninsular
Halifax streets is advantageous to the needs of cyclists. In
particular, the proposed Brunswick Street route is ideally suited
for the needs of cyclists who may want access to downtown
destinations from the Macdonald Bridge and the special heritage
features of the route make the journey aesthetically pleasing to
cyclists. It is a flat and straight route, running parallel to the
high volume Barrington Street main artery into the downtown core.
Along most of the route there are few heavily traveled access
points, and it appears well lit. It is not necessary to consider a
dedicated bikeway along most of the proposed route.
In this phase of the ‘Streets for Cycling
Project,’ we have developed a 'design toolkit' which includes:
A photographic study of conditions along the
Brunswick Street route was performed to supplement an inspection and
inventory of route conditions relevant to preparation and
maintenance of the cycle route.
Cycle laneway standards form the parameters
for realignment of street markings to accommodate the shared
lanes.
Concepts and
design treatments for the proposed cycle route, intended for
presentation to stakeholder groups for their input
