CYCLING
Streets for Cycling Iniative
Duke to Sackville Lane Reconfiguration
The closure of Brunswick Street to Bridge traffic will
have impacts on traffic levels along the entire length of the street. A
considerable volume of bridge traffic previously using Brunswick Street will be
diverted to Barrington Street and other main arteries serving the downtown
corridor. The current laneway system along Brunswick Street is designed to
accommodate existing traffic demand that includes bridge traffic. It is possible
to examine potential changes that will not inconvenience motorists or existing
land users. At the same time, the same changes may be advantageous to cyclists
who will use the proposed route.
The Sackville to Prince segment of the roadway is
approximately 15.5 meters wide, with a centerline at approximately 7.25 meters
from each curb. There are two traffic lanes, in each direction. The inside lanes
are both approximately 2.7 meters wide and the outside lanes are approximately
5.0 meters wide to accommodate parking on the west side, and loading zones and a
5-car cab stand on the east side.
From Prince to George Street, the roadway is
approximately 16 meters wide with the centre line at approximately 7.25 meters
from the western curb, providing an 8.75 meter width for northbound lanes. The
outside northbound lane allows parking, and provides space for a bus stop and
loading zones, while the southbound outside lane has metered parking space.
From George to the intersection of Duke and Rainnie
Drive, the roadway and traffic lane are the same width as on the Sackville to
Prince segment.
