CYCLING
Streets for Cycling Iniative

Criteria For Realignment of Street Markings

In order to operate, a cyclist requires essential lateral space of 1 meter. Another .5 meters is required for comfortable lateral space[1] . A shared car parking/bike lane could be considered if the following additional lateral dimensions are taken into account:

Essential lateral space requirements for a parked car is 2.1 meters and a comfortable lateral car parking space is 2.4 meters[2]

A 0.20 meter wide lane-stripe is recommended for shared roadways.[3]

Additional pavement marking of the same width should extend from parking space markings to separate bikeway road space from the rest of the lane.

Total optimal lateral space requirements for a shared parking/ bikeway lane is 4.3 meters from the curb. Total minimal lateral requirements for the same space is 3.5 meters.
