Pavement Markings in HRM

HRM’s annual pavement marking program is currently underway.

Once per year, beginning in May and continuing through to August, or later, depending on weather conditions, HRM crews and contractors repaint all yellow centrelines, white lane lines, crosswalks, stop bars and arrows.  Painting may also be delayed due to current or pending construction projects.  These locations are deferred until the construction project is completed.  The project contractors are responsible for reinstating all pavement markings at the conclusion of the construction job.

The painting program includes:
- over 1500 km of yellow centreline and white lane lines
- over 65,000 metres of crosswalks and stop bars and
- more than 3800 arrows.

The contractors work during the day and night.  However, they focus their attention on minor intersections during the day, where there is minimal traffic disruption.  The major intersections, which encounter heavy traffic, must be done during the overnight hours to avoid conflicts with traffic and allow the paint time to dry without being disturbed and depend on appropriate weather and temperature conditions in order to complete night time work.

So, if you’ve noticed faded paint markings in your neighbourhood or during your commute, there is no need to call to request that it be done.  Rest assured it is included in the program and it will be repainted this year.
We appreciate your patience and support.
