Get Out.. and Check Out the BLT Trail
When the rail bed in the Beechville Lakeside Timberlea (BLT) area was removed, the land was recognized as excellent for trail development; for the areas where the former rail bed crossed the roadway, and for the natural greenbelts. The former rail bed converted nicely into a beautiful scenic trail - it is backed primarily on one side by water and residential or commercial development on the other. This also allows for easy access by users.
In 2000, the committee was able to encourage Community interest and involvement; and secured funding and authorized land use. The trail development progressed shortly after - in 2001 directional and informational signage was erected, the lake and lake runs were cleaned and 6km of the trail surface was constructed. In 2002, another 3 km of trail surface was added and culverts and benches were placed along the new trailway. In 2003 the trail was extended to cross St Margarets Bay Rd at Hubley for a total of 13 km in all.
In 2004 and 2005, additional benches and trail head signs were installed and two small sections were paved due to erosion problems.
Plans to extend the trail through the Bayers Lake Park have begun and will continue with the trail eventually extended to Halifax on the soon to be abandoned rail bed.
The BLT is designated as part of the HRM and Provincial Active Transportation system and is part of the second phase of the Trans Canada Trail.
The mission of the BLT is to develop a recreational trail in a healthy environment for the benefit of this and future generations.
