The Halifax North West Trails Association (HNWTA) is a not-for-profit society whose objectives are to promote the creation, protection and maintenance of trails within the Halifax Mainland North area (St. Margarets Bay Road to Hammonds Plain Road and the Bedford Basin to the Birch Cove Lakes), including those in the Mainland Common. This is a large area including Districts 10, 15, 16 and some of 21, 17 and 18.
These trails serve and provide linkages to the local communities and neighbourhoods.
The association encourages the use of the trails by all citizens for fitness and health, appreciation and observation of nature and tourism. A focus on Active Transportation within communities is a mandate for HNWTA.
Trail walks are conducted during the Spring, Summer and Fall. For more information, visit the HNWTA website at: http://halifax.ca/trails/HalifaxNorthwestTrailsAssociation.html

Next steps:
As new development unfolds, HNWTA proposes to continue to work with the development officers and planners to help implement acceptable trails, walkways and pathways that are in harmony with the community plans. The developers generally build these trails as a part of their parkland contribution. Currently, Bedford West is under discussion and Larry Uteck Drive is anticipated shortly – both will be considered Primary Trail links for Active Transportation, with secondary Trail opportunites.
The proposed Blue Mountain - Birch Coves Lakes Regional Park has potential for trails of many types including canoe routes and a tertiary network. Planning for the future development of this network will be one of our next steps in partnership with HRM. Check the trails website for future meetings, hikes and news about long term planning.
