Sport and Recreation
To expand and develop community recreation venues while preserving existing natural settings.
Implementation of the Shubenacadie Canal development plan.
- Construction of a pedestrian bypass of Highway 102 to connect the local sections of the proposed Shubenacadie Trail.
(Fund raising by SCC, local groups)
- Complete the proposed section of the Shubenacadie Trail from Fall River to Wellington.
(SCC initiative)
Adopt a “15 minute walk to a facility” strategy. (This means that some form of recreation facility is within a 15 minute walking distance from anywhere in the community)
- Encourage local groups to fundraise for development of parks, playgrounds and recreation facilities throughout the community.
- HRM initiate a parks and facilities development plan for the community.
- Encourage developers to adopt a turnkey parks and facility operation.
(Perhaps reduce percentage of recreational set asides required if a turnkey facility is included in the subdivision)
Preserve, develop and maintain community trails.
- Identify important local trail systems.
- Develop the trail systems with standardized signage and key maps.
- Use current municipal regulations and funding to preserve those identified.
- Obtain rights to above trails.
Preserve public lands.
- HRM not divest itself of any public lands to private/commercial development.
- HRM invest in waterfront properties for public access to waterways.
- Community convene an HRM/Provincial conference to further acheivement of above goals.
Develop multi use open spaces.
- Identify venues for future development of sports fields.
(Action by:Community groups)
- Develop 20 year plan for construction of sports fields.
(Action by: HRM)
Establish the efficacy of indoor sports facilities.
- Undertake a feasibility study to:
Determine the usage rate of current facilities in HRM;
Determine impact of currently planned new facilities;
Determine capital and maintenance costs of any facility; and
Determine if any new facility would be compliant with the Indoor Recreationfacility Master Plan Primary Filter. (Click here for list of rules)
- Publish findings.
