Each year Halifax Regional Municipality, the Mayor and Regional Council recognize the extraordinary contributions of individuals and groups who volunteer their time and skills to provide services and programs in HRM communities.   

2012 Award Recipients

Richard's passion for soccer has led to a life-long commitment to the game and to giving others in his community the opportunity to know and love soccer. For more than 30 years, he has trained soccer coaches, competitive soccer teams and recreational soccer players. He currently devotes a significant amount of time on a weekly basis to the Halifax City Soccer Club where he coaches the Under 12 Select Team and supports other Club programs. He manages to carve out time from a very busy law practice, an active family life and other volunteer commitments to share his time, talents and technical knowledge with young players who are keen to develop their skills. He instills strong values in those players including good sportsmanship, commitment, promptness, hard work, trying your best, having fun, looking after your body and to adopt an active, healthy lifestyle.

In addition to his devotion to soccer, Richard has also been involved with Dartmouth Adult Services Centre (DASC) Industries, University of Kings College, The Continuing Legal Education Society of Nova Scotia, providing wills and estate planning advice on a volunteer basis to terminally ill patients, BMW Club of Atlantic Canada, Halifax Alta Gymnastics Club, Abilities Foundation of Nova Scotia and Injury Free Nova Scotia.

Nomination Criteria

• All nominations must appear on a separate form. Feel free to make copies of this form or call the number below for additional forms.

• The entire application must be filled out by the Nominator. Please research and record your nominee’s experience, not just the work they have done with your organization, but their entire work. It is critical to ensure all areas of the nomination form are completed and explained well for scoring purposes.

PLEASE NOTE: A short 1-2 sentence description of the nominee’s contribution will be prepared from this nomination form to be read during the ceremony, as well as acknowledging you as the nominator.

Adult & Youth

• The adult and/or youth volunteer you nominate may be either an individual within your organization or someone in the community you feel is extremely deserving of recognition. Nominees must be a resident of HRM.
• The nominee’s volunteer efforts listed on this form must truly be volunteer; that is they are not paid for their efforts nor are they staff in an organization. If they are paid for some of their work, this work cannot be listed on the form. For example, if John Doe gets paid for taking care of the financial books of ABC group, but also volunteers on the Community BBQ committee, list only the Community BBQ work.
• Youth nominees must be between the ages of 13-19.
• Please note that, at most, one adult and one youth from any organization can receive an award.
• The nominee cannot have received this award in the last 5 years. To find out if nominees have received the award in the past, please look online or call 490-4535.

Volunteer Group

• The Group Volunteer Award is open for any volunteer group (a club, society, or association that is organized and operated without the purpose of making profit) that has made a significant impact on building stronger communities through services, programs, projects and/or events and delivers these in HRM.
• Volunteer groups that are nominated are eligible for an award in only one of the three categories. On the following form, please select the category that fits the group you are nominating.
  
  • Category 1: Community group with annual finances and grants under $50,000
  • Category 2: Community group with annual finances and grants exceeding $50,000
  • Category 3: Community youth group (youth volunteers up to 25 years old)

   

• The nominee cannot have received this award in the last year. To find out if they have received the award, please look online or call 490-4535.
  

Award Selection Process

Adult & Youth

• Once all nominations are received, they are scored. Awards are allotted by each of the 23 districts.
• All nominees and award recipients are presented to Executive Standing Committee of Council for final approval.
• All nominees will receive a letter from the Mayor, in March, to thank them for their community contribution. However, successful nominees will be invited to attend a ceremony and reception in April with the Mayor and Council to receive their award.
• As the nominator, if you are interested in finding out if your nominee is an award winner, please contact 490-4535 or mackinnb@halifax.ca any time after March 15th, 2012.
• The 10 top scoring volunteers in HRM are automatically sent on to the Provincial Volunteer Awards, which means some nominees may actually receive an additional award from the Province.
  

Volunteer Group:

• Once all nominations are received, they are scored by staff. One award is allotted for each of the three group categories.
• All nominees and award recipients are presented to Executive Standing Committee of Council for final approval.
• All nominees will receive a letter from the Mayor, in March, either to thank them for their community contribution, or invite them to the Volunteer Awards Ceremony in April to receive a certificate from the Mayor and Council.
