What Goes Where Guides

Bag / Container Limits:

Single unit/Semi-Detached/Rowhouse/Townhouse

  • Up to 6 bags or containers per household,
  • 5 bundles of wood or home renovation material can be included in the 6 bag limit
    • i.e. 3 bags of garbage + 3 bundles of wood
    • not to exceed 1.2 metres or 4 ft in length
    • Maximum weight of bundled wood is 34 kg (75 lb)
  • 1 bulky item

 

Apartment buildings up to 6 units

  • Up to 5 bags or containers per unit
  • 2 bulky items
  • No wood or renovation material permitted

Bulky items include large appliances, fridge (CFC-free), old furniture, mattresses.  CFC removal service is FREE for households eligible for curbside collection.

Proper Containers/Weight Limits:
  • Plastic Bag (must be secure)
    • Length no less than .5 metres and 1 metre when empty
    • Weight, including contents, not more than 25 kg (55 lbs)
    • Watertight & securely fastened
    • Thickness adequate to carry the load
    • Must not be of a yellow, red or transparent blue colour

  • Metal or Plastic Container:
    • Equipped with handles in good repair and a tight fitting cover
    • Not more than 76 cm (30 inches) in height
    • Not more than 51cm (1.7 ft.) in diameter
    • Weight, including contents, not to exceed 34 kg (75 lb.)

Tires & Auto Parts

  • Tires are not accepted for curbside collection. Up to 4 passenger or small truck tires can be brought back to any tire retail center free of charge. For more information on tire recycling, visit www.rrfb.com.
  • Auto parts are not accepted for curbside collection.

Electronics

  • Effective February 1, 2009 the following electronic devices will no longer be accepted in the regular garbage stream.  This is in addition to computers, monitors, printers and televisions which were banned from disposal in N.S landfills in February 2008.

    • Audio and video playback and recording systems:
      • personal/portable audio/video systems, radios, speakers, CD players, MP3 players, stereos
      • digital cameras, video cameras and camcorders
      • VCR's, DVD players
      • clock radios
      • car stereo systems
      • home theatre in a box
    • Telephones (corded and cordless), fax and answering machines
    • Computer Scanners
    • Cell Phones and other wireless devices

  • To locate the nearest drop off centre visit www.acestewardship.ca/ or call 1-877-774-3260.
  • There is NO FEE to drop these items off for recycling.

  • Some items that are no longer of use to you may be valuable to someone else.  Check our list of Alternatives to Landfill for ideas.

Excess Material:

Excess Waste can be taken to the Otter Lake Waste Processing and Disposal Facility. Please note, recyclable material is not accepted at this facility, and certain fees apply.

Excess quantities of home renovation materials can be disposed of by contacting a licensed Construction & Demolition Debris Recycling Center.

What Goes in the Garbage

The following list are examples of what goes in the garbage.  Place for collection in a tied bag or secured container.
