The Materials Recycling Facility (MRF) processes all blue bag and fibre (paper and cardboard) collected in HRM's residential curbside program and the small amount of material deposited in the onsite public drop off bins.

Commercial Customers Please Note
Effective December 11th, 2008 the MRF will no longer accept corrugated cardboard (OCC) from the commercial sector.
- Paper (i.e., office paper, newspaper, flyers, magazines etc.) from the ICI sector will continue to be accepted at the MRF, provided loads do not contain any OCC. No fee will apply.
- Blue bag recyclables will continue to be accepted from the ICI sector, as long as they are separate from fibre (paper). No fee will apply.
- Local private markets continue to receive, with a fee charged, baled and non baled OCC, and sorted office paper from the ICI sector.
Please speak with your contracted waste hauler to discuss how this may impact the service they provide you. All of these materials, including OCC are still considered recyclable and will not be accepted at the Otter Lake landfill.
