Are you ready to accept the 'Challenge'?
In HRM, we work hard to protect the environment. In 1996 HRM regional Council set a goal of diverting 60% of our waste from the landfill, setting the stage for our world class waste management system.
While we've been close, we have yet to reach our 60% target. In fact we seem to have reached a plateau and have hovered around the 55% mark for several years. It is time for all residents to think about the type and volume of waste they are producing, and how we can reach 60% diversion of our waste. |

Waste Audits
In 2003-04, HRM initiated a series of three audits at the Otter Lake Waste Processing and Disposal Facility. In a random sampling of loads, we found that 53% of what we are throwing in the trash is actually valuable recyclable or compostable material. This number grew to 68% in commercial loads!
It is quite clear where we can improve our recycling and composting efforts. By simply separating recyclable paper or organic material, we can reduce our refuse by up to half!
