Join Halifax Regional Municipality and Helping Nature Heal at Lake Echo Beach in Lake Echo for a hands-on, community-driven, multi-day workshop focused on implementing nature-based solutions to improve riparian zone health. As part of a shoreline restoration project designed to achieve Green Shores® certification, participants will play an active role in restoring the shoreline while learning how nature-based infrastructure can be used to protect and enhance healthy, resilient waterfront ecosystems.
The Living Lakeshores workshop will extend from October 6 to October 8, 2026, with an additional half-day scheduled for Saturday, October 10, 2026, for those who are unable to attend the core workshop due to work and other commitments. This opportunity is open to everyone above the age of majority, although children are welcome when accompanied by a parent or guardian. Participants will gain hands-on experience and learn practical skills to help restore natural ecosystems and build more resilient landscapes. All days of the workshop are free to attend.
In addition to building climate and ecological resilience, this project seeks to build community resilience through the incorporation of an art project. While restoration work is underway, artist Carmahn McCalla will be working on painting a mural on the sea can where lifeguard supplies are stored at Lake Echo Beach. The family-oriented workshop on Saturday, October 10, 2026, will double as an unveiling of the new art piece in the Lake Echo community.
