February is African Heritage Month in Nova Scotia. This year's provincial theme, Strength in Unity - Moving forward with Purpose, Prosperity, Power and Progress, emphasizes the enormous impacts that come when African Nova Scotians and people of African descent stand united with a shared sense of direction.
African Heritage Month provides a special opportunity to celebrate the culture, legacy, achievements and contributions of African Nova Scotians, both past and present. The municipality is committed to addressing anti-Black racism in our workplaces and communities and will continue to take steps to advance change.
Residents are encouraged to celebrate the rich culture of people of African descent by participating in this year’s events and activities:

African Heritage Month Opening Night
In partnership with the Halifax Public Libraries and the African History Month Association, the Office of Diversity & Inclusion/ANSAIO welcomes residents to kick-off African Heritage Month at Paul O’Regan Hall, Central Library with musical performance by Josh Williams.

Flag Raising and Panel Discussion
Attend an African Heritage Month flag raising at Grand Parade before moving indoors to Halifax Hall for a proclamation reading by Mayor Fillmore, a panel discussion and light refreshments. The panel conversation will bring together youth and elders to reflect on the power, purpose and importance of celebrating African heritage, culture and legacy.

Other Events
Residents are also encouraged to take part in other events throughout the municipality celebrating African Heritage Month:
- City Hall is illuminated in black, green and red in honour of African Heritage Month, starting Monday, Jan. 20 until the end of February.
- The Pan-African flag will be displayed at both the Burnside and Ragged Lake Transit Centres, as well as ferry terminals as weather permits.
- Residents are encouraged to explore the Halifax Public Libraries African Heritage Month virtual portal, featuring programs that celebrate the African Nova Scotian community.
Nova Scotia is home to 52 historic African Nova Scotian communities, each with a profound and complex history spanning over two centuries.

Célébration du Mois du patrimoine africain 2026
Février est le Mois du patrimoine africain en Nouvelle‑Écosse. Le thème provincial de cette année, L’union fait la force – aller de l’avant avec détermination, prospérité, puissance et progrès, souligne les répercussions énormes que peut engendrer l’union des Néo-Écossais d’origine africaine et des personnes d’ascendance africaine dans une vision commune.
Le Mois du patrimoine africain offre l’occasion spéciale de célébrer la culture, l’héritage, les réalisations et les contributions des Néo-Écossais d’origine africaine, d’hier et d’aujourd’hui. La Municipalité s’engage à lutter contre le racisme anti‑Noir sur ses lieux de travail et dans ses communautés et continuera à prendre des mesures pour faire avancer le changement.
Les résidents sont encouragés à célébrer la riche culture des personnes d’ascendance africaine en participant aux événements et aux activités de cette année :

Soirée d’ouverture du Mois du patrimoine africain
En collaboration avec les bibliothèques publiques d’Halifax et l’African History Month Association, le Bureau de la diversité et de l’inclusion/BIANEA invite la population au lancement du Mois du patrimoine africain. Cet événement se tiendra au Paul O’Regan Hall, situé dans la bibliothèque centrale, où Josh Williams offrira une prestation musicale.

Levée du drapeau et discussion en groupe
Assistez à la levée du drapeau du Mois du patrimoine africain à Grand Parade avant de vous rendre à l’hôtel de ville d’Halifax pour assister à la lecture de la proclamation par le maire Fillmore et à une discussion de groupe. Des rafraîchissements seront servis. La conversation de groupe réunira des jeunes et des aînés qui aborderont le pouvoir, l’objectif et l’importance de célébrer le patrimoine, la culture et l’héritage africains.

Les résidents sont également encouragés à participer à d’autres événements dans toute la municipalité célébrant le Mois du patrimoine africain :
- L’hôtel de ville sera illuminé en noir, vert et rouge en l’honneur du Mois du Patrimoine africain, du mardi 27 janvier jusqu’à la fin du mois de février.
- Le drapeau panafricain sera hissé aux centres de transport en commun de Burnside et de Ragged Lake, ainsi qu’aux terminaux des traversiers, si le temps le permet.
- Explorez le portail virtuel (en anglais seulement) du Mois du patrimoine africain de bibliothèques publiques de Halifax afin de découvrir les programmes prévus pour célébrer la communauté africaine de la Nouvelle‑Écosse.
La Nouvelle‑Écosse compte 52 communautés néo-écossaises d’origine africaine historiques, chacune ayant une histoire profonde et complexe qui s’étend sur plus de deux siècles.
