With the success of the initial program, Halifax Water has been granted approval by Nova Scotia Environment to undertake a second seasonal disinfection pilot program. Halifax Water implemented a successful pilot seasonal disinfection program from March 1 to April 30, 2016 without any adverse effects to the environment, as shown through the water sampling results associated with the program.
This second pilot program will see the Ultra Violet (UV) disinfection systems shut down at the Halifax, Dartmouth, Herring Cove and Eastern Passage wastewater treatment facilities (WWTFs), from November 7, 2016 to April 30, 2017. The UV systems will be turned on December 19, 2016 - January 2, 2017 to accommodate Polar Bear swims. Full screening of floatables and all other treatment processes will continue to operate year round.
Halifax Water is enhancing its sampling program for this second pilot program. Monitoring of bacteria levels will take place bi-weekly at selected sites around Halifax Harbour. Our initial pilot program provided for monthly sampling.
