Police investigate fatal collision GO#19-79125

UPDATE: Akerley Boulevard, Dartmouth has re-opened to traffic in both directions. 

UPDATE: Akerley Boulevard, Dartmouth had been closed due to a motor vehicle collision.  The closure was between Gloria MCCluskey Avenue and the exit to Highway 118. Emergency crews were on-scene.

Halifax Regional Police are currently on-scene of a fatal motor vehicle collision that occurred tonight in Dartmouth.

On June 6 at 11:16 p.m., Halifax Regional Police responded to the Akerley Boulevard east of Gloria McCluskey Avenue to a report of a vehicle on fire. It was determined that the vehicle was travelling west bound on Akerley Boulevard and went off the road colliding with a guardrail and then a wall. The engine caught on fire but was extinguished by another motorist. The passenger, a man, was help from the vehicle and taken to hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. The driver, a man, was declared deceased at the scene.  

Officers from the Halifax Regional Police Forensic Identification Section, Accident Investigation Unit and Patrol are currently on-scene conducting their investigation. The west bound lane on Akerley Boulevard is closed at the collision site and vehicles are being turned around onto the east bound lane which is flowing normally. It is expected that the west bound traffic will be impacted for a few more hours.
