A watershed is an area where all surface water drains into a common water body such as a river, lake or ocean.
When it rains, soil, pet waste, yard waste, pesticides, fertilizers, salt, oil/grease, litter and other pollutants get washed into the storm drains throughout Halifax Municipality. These storm drains empty into our lakes and rivers. Ultimately, everything that goes into a storm drain and runs off the surface of the land ends up, untreated, in our lakes, river and ocean—our watershed areas.
Source Water Protection is the first step in Halifax Water's Multiple Barrier Approach, a series of checks and balances to produce high quality water from the water source to the customer's tap and back to the source.
