Construction Project Overview
This summer, the Halifax Regional Municipality, in partnership with Halifax Water, will be completing significant upgrades along St. Margaret’s Bay Road from Quarry Road to Douglas Drive. Once completed, the project will provide enhanced infrastructure and help improve safety for residents.
Infrastructure improvements include:
- New asphalt
- New sidewalks on both sides of the road
- New curb and gutter
- New watermain and storm sewer
- Upgraded push-button activated overhead crosswalk (RA-5) at Fenwood Road/ Fenerty Road
Project duration & traffic access
In order to undertake this work, a full street closure will occur on St. Margaret’s Bay Road between Douglas Drive and Quarry Road beginning July 24, 2017.
A construction project of this nature will have an impact on businesses, residents and visitors to the area and the street closure is necessary to ensure timely completion and minimize the duration of the project.
Access will be maintained to the businesses and residents, but it will result in no through-traffic along St. Margaret’s Bay Road between Douglas Drive and Quarry Road. A signed detour plan will be provided to help those travelling in this area.
During this time, Halifax Transit Routes 6, 22, and 23 will be on detour. These detours will go into effect at the start of service day July 24th. See detour map and description for Route 6, Route 22 and Route 23. Check out Halifax Transit service disruptions for updates.
Note that By-law S-300 [PDF] states that pavement cuts shall not be permitted (except for emergency water or sewer breaks, etc.) for two years after the street has been paved. For any private project requiring a pavement cut, please apply for a permit and ensure the work is finished before the St. Margaret’s Bay Road construction project is started.
Please contact 311 if you have any questions, or if you are aware of any problems (e.g. drainage or sewer lateral issues).
