Shore Up Workshop at Albro Lake Park: Community-based naturalization for long-term resilience.

Join Halifax Regional Municipality at Albro Lake Park (1 Sea King Drive, Dartmouth) for a hands-on, multi-day workshop using nature-based solutions to create a healthier riparian zone. Participants will actively participate in the naturalization of the lakeshore using techniques taught by Helping Nature Heal Inc.

This workshop is open to everyone (ages 18 and older) and will have a variety of tasks will be available to suit different physical abilities and comfort levels.  Participants will learn widely applicable approaches to enhancing freshwater shoreline health and promoting local biodiversity. You can learn more about these approaches by reading about Helping Nature Heal’s Shore Up program here: https://helpingnatureheal.com/shore-up-nova-scotia/

The workshop will take place over three days: April 21-23 from 9am-4pm, each day. The morning of the first day will be spent learning more about the importance of naturalization projects and becoming familiar with effective approaches. The following days will be focused on implementing those approaches at Albro Lake Park. We will also be hosting a half-day open house on Saturday, April 25, from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Community members are welcome to visit the site, learn about the new plantings, and their care, and help with planting and watering.

Participation in as many days as possible is strongly encouraged, but we understand that this may not be feasible for everyone, so partial attendance can also be accommodated. You can specify the days you expect to attend in the registration form below.

This workshop will be taking place entirely outdoors in rain or shine, and we ask that participants prepare according to the weather conditions. Because April in Nova Scotia can be unpredictable, we recommend dressing in layers. In addition to weather-appropriate clothing and work-safe footwear, we recommend bringing work gloves, sunscreen, bug spray, a reusable water bottle and mug, lawn chair and any other items that will make the day more comfortable for you. Light snacks will be provided, but participants must bring their own lunch. There is a public washroom on-site.

If you are interested in joining, please fill out the registration form below. We will email you confirmation of your registration within 1-3 business days.

Full details about the workshop can be found here:
