Street and Sidewalk Events

Who do I send my event application to?  HRM or Nova Scotia Public Works (NSPW)?

NSPW are responsible for roads within HRM which are outside of the Service Exchange Boundary.

If your event falls within the Exchange Area Boundary, it is an HRM event:

  1. Open the map and click the 'Layer List Button' at the bottom.
  2. In the Layer List, scroll down and select the "NSPW-to-HRM Service Exchange Boundary" checkbox if it is not already checked.

The HRM service area is indicated by a thick orange line.

If you are within the HRM service area boundary, fill out the appropriate event application below.

If you are outside the service area boundary, your street is managed by Nova Scotia Public Works. Go to Events on Provincial Roads

Block Parties

If you are interested in hosting a block party or looking for information on what is involved in hosting a block party, call 3-1-1 or email directly for information.  You must fill out a Block Party Application. Fill out the application, save it as a pdf file and return to the e-mail address noted on the application.

Parades, Runs, Walks, etc.

For other events (parade, walk, run, march, etc) in the public right-of-way (street or sidewalk), you are required to fill out a public right-of-way event application.  Each application will be reviewed on its own merit, with safety of participants the number one consideration.  Per the Motor Vehicle Act, these events must be approved by the Traffic Authority and an approved event will receive a permit signed by the Traffic Authority. There is no fee for the permit. You can fill out the application and return the saved pdf file to the email address on the application.  Larger events requiring municipal services such as police or street closures may be redirected to the Special Event Task Force.  More information can be found below.

*NEW/IMPORTANT - AUTUMN 2022.  If your event is within RCMP jurisdiction and you require RCMP to assist your event, you should visit your local RCMP detachment with your application or call 902.244.7208 to advise you will be requiring their assistance.  A permit from HRM can only be issued for those events if RCMP is able to accommodate.
