Residents are invited to attend the annual Halifax Explosion memorial service being held Monday, Dec. 6 to reflect on the tragic event that occurred 104 years ago and the immense relief effort that was undertaken during its aftermath.
An official ceremony will be held at 9 a.m. at the Fort Needham Memorial Park - Bell Tower in Halifax.
The devastating explosion occurred on Dec. 6, 1917 when two ships - the French munitions ship, the Mont Blanc, and the Norwegian relief ship, the Imo – collided in the Narrows of Halifax Harbour. Over 2,000 people were killed and an additional 9,000 were injured as a result of the explosion, which was known at the time as the deadliest man-made explosion in history. Almost all of north-end Halifax was destroyed, and buildings throughout Halifax and Dartmouth were significantly damaged.
Monday’s service will include a smudging ceremony, memorial prayer, a moment of silence, official remarks by Mayor Mike Savage and Councillor Lindell Smith, and the laying of memorial wreaths.

Les résidents sont invités à assister au service commémoratif annuel de l’explosion d’Halifax qui se tiendra le lundi 6 décembre pour réfléchir à l’événement tragique qui s’est produit il y a 104 ans et à l’immense effort de secours qui a été entrepris par la suite.
Une cérémonie officielle aura lieu à 9 h au Parc commémoratif Fort Needham – Bell Tower, à Halifax.
L’explosion dévastatrice s’est produite le 6 décembre 1917 lorsque deux navires – le navire de munitions français, le Mont Blanc, et le navire de secours norvégien, l’Imo – se sont heurtés dans les Narrows du port de Halifax. Plus de 2 000 personnes ont été tuées et 9 000 autres blessées à la suite de l’explosion, connue à l’époque comme l’explosion la plus meurtrière de l’histoire. Presque toute la partie nord de Halifax a été détruite, et les bâtiments de Halifax et de Dartmouth ont subi des dommages importants.
Le service de lundi comprendra une cérémonie de purification par la fumée, une prière commémorative, un moment de silence, des remarques officielles du maire Mike Savage et du conseiller Lindell Smith, ainsi que le dépôt de couronnes commémoratives.
