14-96784 - traffic stop results in charges against driver for assaulting a police officer

On July 10, at 12:15 a.m., an east division patrol officer conducted  a traffic stop on a pickup truck in the area of Portland Street and Eisener Boulevard in Dartmouth.  The vehicle was proceeding outbound on Portland street and was stopped for speeding.  The officer learned  the 22-year-old male driver was unlicensed and uninsured.  During the traffic stop the driver suddenly started the truck  and was attempting to put it into gear.  The officer attempted to prevent the driver from fleeing and during the altercation was dragged approximately 30 feet by the vehicle before falling to the roadway.  The officer sustained minor road rash and was able to quickly return to her vehicle and pursue the driver.  At 12:28 a.m. the driver and vehicle were located in the 0-100 block of Alberni Lane.  The 22-year-old driver was taken into custody without incident and will appear in Dartmouth Provincial court later today..

He is facing the following charges: Assaulting a police officer, Assault with a weapon, Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, Flight from police.   Under the motor vehicle act, he was issued tickets for being an unlicensed driver and having no insurance.

Thankfully the officer involved received minor injuries and was able to return to their patrol duties.
