Wednesday, Nov. 16, 2016 (Halifax, NS) – Grand Parade is the place to be on New Year’s Eve as Halifax launches a full year of celebrations to mark the 150th anniversary of Canada.
The already festive night, presented by Eastlink, will have an extra shine to it this year, as the provincial capital begins toasting Canada 150, a year-long tribute to the birth of Confederation.
Halifax is stepping up its party game with enhanced New Year’s Eve festivities at Grand Parade and the Emera Oval, where the focus will be on highlighting the past 150 years as a country.
“Halifax has a long, proud history within this great country,” said Mayor Mike Savage. “Today we stand alongside cities from across Canada in recognizing and celebrating 150 years of nationhood as we also look to help shape the way forward.”
As part of the Canada 150 celebrations, the federal government is contributing $130,000 to help make Halifax’s New Year’s Eve the best ever.
“On New Year’s Eve, several cities across Canada will count down the final hours of the year and kick off the festivities for the 150th anniversary of Confederation with a bang,” said The Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Canadian Heritage. “I invite citizens of Halifax to join in this major celebration to mark the start of a truly historic year.”
Halifax Member of Parliament Andy Fillmore highlighted the fact the upcoming year of celebration will focus on inclusivity. “The 150th anniversary of confederation - or Canada 150 - is a chance for Canadians from every walk of life to celebrate our nation's diversity, history, environment, and place in the world.
"Our federal government is investing in local projects and events, like this one in Halifax, to bring that celebration right to the heart of our communities," said Fillmore.
The one-time grant this year from the federal government will mean being able to attract award-winning musical guests, a traditional Aboriginal welcoming, and an historical multimedia photo and video montage reflecting on various celebrations over the past 150 years in Halifax.
The headliner for this year’s festivities at Grand Parade will be Juno Award winner The Strumbellas, one of Canada’s biggest tour bands this year. Halifax will also be treated to the musical talents of Ria Mae, who recently won five Music Nova Scotia awards and is nominated for a Juno.
The festivities at Grand Parade begin at 10 p.m. and will culminate with the largest fireworks display in Atlantic Canada at midnight. Earlier in the evening another fireworks display will be held at the Emera Oval, so the younger residents of the municipality can join in on the Canada 150 kick-off.
Eastlink is the presenting broadcaster and will be airing the entire event to its subscribers.

150e anniversaire de la Confédération : c’est à Halifax, dès la Saint-Sylvestre, que ça commence!
Le mercredi 16 novembre 2016 (Halifax, Nouvelle-Écosse) – La veille du jour de l’An, cette année, c’est au Grand Parade que ça se passe. En effet, c’est là que Halifax donnera le coup d’envoi à toute une année de festivités marquant le 150e anniversaire du Canada. La soirée sera présentée par Eastlink.
Au-delà des feux d’artifice traditionnels, c’est rien de moins qu’un toast à la Confédération que la capitale provinciale portera à la santé de « Canada 150 », une fête qui durera toute l’année.
Halifax cassera donc la baraque avec des festivités du Nouvel An plus grandioses que jamais au Grand Parade et à l’Emera Oval, où l’on célébrera les 150 ans du pays.
« Halifax est fière de la longue histoire qu’elle partage avec notre grand pays, souligne le maire Mike Savage. C’est pourquoi elle rallie toutes les villes du Canada qui salueront les 150 ans d’une nation qui peut aussi compter sur elle pour bâtir l’avenir. »
Dans le cadre de Canada 150, le gouvernement fédéral verse d’ailleurs 130 000 $ à Halifax pour faire de cette Saint-Sylvestre la plus mémorable de son histoire.
« La veille du jour de l’An, plusieurs villes d’un océan à l’autre entreprendront le fameux compte à rebours pour donner aux festivités du 150e anniversaire tout l’éclat qu’elles méritent, renchérit l’honorable Mélanie Joly, ministre du Patrimoine canadien. J’invite les citoyens d’Halifax à prendre part à cette grande fête pour souligner le début d’une année en soi historique. »
Andy Fillmore, député fédéral d’Halifax, souligne que les festivités seront placées sous le signe du pluralisme : « Canada 150, le 150e anniversaire de la Confédération, c’est l’occasion pour les Canadiennes et les Canadiens de tous les horizons de célébrer la diversité du pays, son histoire, son environnement et sa place dans le concert des nations.
« Le gouvernement fédéral investit dans des projets et des événements locaux, comme celui d’Halifax, pour que toute la population puisse prendre part directement aux réjouissances », ajoute-t-il.
Grâce à cette subvention fédérale exceptionnelle, la ville pourra faire venir des grands noms de la musique, organiser une cérémonie d’accueil autochtone traditionnelle et créer un montage multimédia photo-vidéo rappelant les diverses célébrations qu’elle a accueillies au cours des 150 dernières années.
Les têtes d’affiches au Grand Parade seront The Strumbellas, un des groupes les plus courus au Canada cette année, d’ailleurs lauréats d’un Juno. Halifax vibrera aussi au son de la musique de Ria Mae, finaliste aux Juno, qui a récemment remporté cinq prix Music Nova Scotia.
Débutant à 22 h, les festivités du Grand Parade culmineront avec les plus grands feux d’artifice du Canada Atlantique à minuit. La pyrotechnie sera également à l’honneur à l’Emera Oval un peu plus tôt, afin que les plus jeunes goûtent aussi aux réjouissances.
Eastlink diffusera la soirée entière pour ses abonnés.
