Wednesday, Aug. 19, 2015 (Halifax, NS) – The Halifax Regional Municipality is advising motorists to drive carefully and expect some delays this Friday, Aug. 21, as the 78th Highlanders march through downtown Halifax for the annual Freedom of the City of Halifax parade.

The event begins at 11 a.m. with an inspection inside the walls of the Halifax Citadel National Historic Site. From there the group will march east on Sackville Street, north on Brunswick Street, east on Duke Street and south on Barrington Street into Grand Parade for further inspection. After that, the group will continue south on Barrington to Government House, where the parade will conclude.

Officers with Halifax Regional Police will be on hand to assist with traffic control during the event, which is expected to wrap up by 1 p.m. Motorists should expect some delays in the area and are advised to find alternative routes, if possible.

The Freedom of the City is a time honoured tradition that dates as far back as the Roman Empire, and was originally granted to military units that had gained the trust of a municipality.
