Businesses Beware of Fraudsters

HRP/RCMP Integrated Financial Crime Unit reminds business owners of the importance of vigilance in avoiding becoming a victim of a credit card fraud.

Over the past couple of weeks, a number of local companies have been victimized by a scam where a fraudster purchases a product over the phone using a credit card number, and has the item picked up by a delivery company and taken to a third location. Later, the company is advised the credit card information used in the purchase was obtained fraudulently and the credit card company won’t authorize payment. At least two car dealerships were targeted that way and their vehicles were shipped to Ontario.

To avoid this type of fraud, the HRP/RCMP Integrated Financial Crimes Unit recommends businesses  process credit cards physically, verifying the signature on the back of the card against other valid identification and sliding the card into a Point of Sale (POS) terminal for authorization. Contact police immediately if you become aware of a fraudulent credit card use.
