Two men face charges in connection with the homicide of Keya Simon and the stabbing of her sister.

At 11:20 p.m. on January 8, 2011 Halifax Regional Police responded to a report of a stabbing at 117 Pinecrest Drive in Dartmouth. Upon arrival, officers found 19-year-old Keya Knita Simon unresponsive inside the front doors of the apartment building. Her 32-year-old sister had also been stabbed.

Yesterday, investigators arrested two suspects in connection with Keya’s homicide and the stabbing of her sister. They were interviewed overnight and as a result of the investigation, charges have been laid against them.

Twenty-five-year-old Demarqus Shane Beals is facing a second degree murder charge in relation to the murder of Keya Simon. Twenty-five-year-old Carondo Shondez Downey is facing charges of aggravated assault and possession of a weapon dangerous to the public in relation to the stabbing. They were remanded to the Central Nova Scotia Correctional Facility overnight and will appear in Dartmouth Provincial Court today.

We are hopeful that these charges will allow the healing to begin for Keya’s family and friends. We extend our sincere sympathies to them.
