Coun. Matt Whitman elected deputy mayor

Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2015 (Halifax, NS) – District 13 Coun. Matt Whitman was elected today by his fellow councillors to serve as deputy mayor for Halifax Regional Municipality.

The new deputy mayor takes over from Deputy Mayor Lorelei Nicoll who held the position for a one-year term.

“I am honoured that my Council colleagues have entrusted me with this honour. I am pleased to be representing Mayor Savage and my colleagues over the next 12 months,” Deputy Mayor Whitman said.

Deputy Mayor Whitman has been a member of Regional Council since October 2012. In that time Deputy Mayor Whitman has taken the level of communication he has with citizens to a whole new level through his use of social media.

A lifelong resident of Halifax, the Saint Mary’s University graduate has lived in Hammonds Plains for 15 years. Prior to becoming a councillor, Deputy Mayor Whitman spent two decades working as a finance and information technology entrepreneur for a variety of firms including TD Bank, Thomson Reuters, AT&T (Tampa, Florida), and Sunlife Financial.

Matt and his wife Cathy have two teenaged children (Kirk, 17, and Morgan, 14).

Since being elected to Regional Council Deputy Mayor Whitman has enjoyed meeting, listening to, and connecting with residents. “People are my priority,” he said moments after winning today’s election.
