A Halifax Regional Police Officer and citizens took a dog out of harm’s way this morning in Halifax.

Between 7-8:30 a.m., a male Patrol Officer ‘pursued’ a dog that was running in and out of traffic. The officer, a self-confessed dog lover, first saw the dog wandering along Citadel Hill, and then it began running through the streets of the city’s south end. The dog travelled down South Park Street to Young Avenue, along Point Pleasant Drive to Tower Road, through Saint Mary’s University campus to Robie Street, eventually ending up on Beaufort Avenue.

While on Beaufort Avenue, a woman stopped her car and gave the officer dog biscuits to help him capture the dog. When that was unsuccessful, the officer used sticks to play fetch with the dog but it darted away whenever the officer came near. Another woman stopped her car and gave the officer chicken from her lunch, and that did the trick. The officer took the dog into ‘custody’ and gave it a special escort to Animal Services from which the owner can claim the dog.

Halifax Regional Police thanks the citizens who helped the officer get the dog out of harm’s way. The dog is described as a shepherd mix wearing a collar made of Cape Breton tartan with the company name of ‘Whiskers to Wags’ on it. The dog’s owner, or anyone with information about the owner, is asked to call 3-1-1. More information about found pets can be found at http://www.halifax.ca/animalservices/Found-Pets.html
