Event Celebrates Acadian Culture with Francophone Community
Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2014 (Halifax, NS) – The Halifax Regional Municipality invites residents to an event in Grand Parade on Thursday, Aug. 14, to celebrate Acadian culture with the Francophone community.
Held one day in advance of National Acadian Day (Aug. 15), the community event in Grand Parade will begin at 8 p.m. with the raising of the Acadian flag by Mayor Mike Savage and Justice Minister Lena Diab. Other event highlights include:
• Performance by the members of Voix d’Acadie of the Acadian national anthem; • Musical set by Tee Chaoui Social Club (T-sha wee), a high-energy Cajun band from south Louisiana; • Screening of French film Il était une fois les Boys in collaboration with the Atlantic Film Festival.
This marks the 2nd year that the municipality has held a flag-raising ceremony to mark National Acadian Day.
With approximately 11,000 residents that identify themselves as Francophone and 46,000 that consider themselves bilingual, the French-speaking community is vibrant and active in Halifax, contributing to the region’s diversity as well as its economic and cultural development.
The municipality would like to acknowledge the efforts of the Conseil communautaire du Grand-Havre (CCGH) in producing the event in Grand Parade. Representatives from CCGH participate in a committee that was created in the spring of 2013 to open the lines of communication between the Francophone community and municipal government. The committee also includes municipal staff, representatives from the Conseil scolaire acadien provincial (CSAP), as well as students and parents of the CSAP.

Célébration de la culture acadienne de concert avec la communauté francophone
Mercredi, le 13 août 2014 (Halifax, N.-É.) - La Municipalité régionale d'Halifax invite les résidents à un événement au Grand Parade, le jeudi 14 août, pour célébrer la culture acadienne de concert avec la communauté francophone.
Tenu la veille de la fête nationale des Acadiens (le 15 août), l'événement communautaire au Grand Parade débutera à 20h00 avec la levée du drapeau acadien par le maire Mike Savage et la ministre de la Justice Lena Diab. L'événement comprendra également:
• l’interprétation de l’hymne national acadien par les membres de la formation des Voix d'Acadie; • un spectacle du groupe musical Tee Chaoui Social Club (T-sha wee), un ensemble cajun haut en énergie du sud de la Louisiane; • le visionnement du film québécois Il était une fois les Boys en collaboration avec le Festival du film de l'Atlantique.
Il s’agit de la deuxième année de suite que la municipalité tient une cérémonie de levée du drapeau pour marquer la fête nationale des Acadiens.
Avec environ 11,000 habitants qui s'identifient comme francophones et 46,000 qui se considèrent bilingues, la communauté de langue française est bien vivante et fort active à Halifax, en contribuant à la diversité de la région ainsi qu’à son développement économique et culturel.
La municipalité tient à souligner les efforts du Conseil communautaire du Grand-Havre (CCGH) dans la production de l'événement au Grand Parade. Des représentants du CCGH participent à un comité créé au printemps 2013 pour établir les lignes de communication entre la communauté francophone et le gouvernement municipal. Le comité comprend également du personnel municipal, des représentants du Conseil scolaire acadien provincial (CSAP) ainsi que des étudiants et des parents du CSAP.
