Thursday, March 13, 2014 (Halifax, NS) - The Halifax Regional Municipality is advising residents to be extremely careful when traveling today, as the temperature is expected to fall quickly throughout the day, which means the rain that is falling now will freeze.
About 25 millimetres of rain fell overnight in most areas and another 10 to 20 millimetres is expected today, tapering off around noon. There continues to be rainfall and flash freezing warnings in effect for the Halifax region, as the temperature is forecast to fall well below zero degrees by this evening. The water on the roads will freeze quickly as a cold northerly flow passes over the region.
Municipal Operations crews are on standby and will salt and sand the streets and sidewalks ahead of time, as they can. Those efforts will be hampered as long as the rain continues to fall.
Motorists are advised to slow down accordingly when driving on the icy streets, and pedestrians and cyclists should be equally cautious when traveling today.
