Halifax Regional Police has referred an incident that occurred this morning (Sun. Feb 9) to the Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) for investigation.

At 4:19 a.m. officers responded to the area of the Radisson Hotel at 1649 Hollis Street for a weapons complaint when four people were refused entry and, after they left, information was received that they may have fired a shot somewhere outside the hotel. Officers began checking the downtown area as well as other downtown hotels for these individuals.

At 4:40 a.m. four Patrol Officers on the downtown beat located the four individuals, three men and one woman, in the area of Barrington and Blowers Streets. As the officers approached them, one of the men began to run south on Barrington Street. As he was running, a gun went off, apparently causing a self-inflicted wound. EHS transported the 25-year-old man to hospital where he has since passed away.

Two of the three other subjects, a man and a woman, were arrested at the scene. The remaining person, a man, was arrested at a Glebe Street address at 5:15 a.m. All three were released later in the day without charges. The HRP/RCMP Integrated Major Crime Unit is continuing their investigation into the initial incident involving a shot being fired outside the hotel.

The death of the man has been referred to SiRT for investigation as its members are responsible for investigating all serious incidents involving police in Nova Scotia, whether or not there is an allegation of wrongdoing. Questions regarding the investigation into his death are to be referred to SiRT.
