At approximately 8:45 a.m. Halifax Regional Police officers responded to the Central Nova Scotia Correctional Facility in Burnside for two inmates who had been injured during a disturbance. Based on the initial investigation, it appears that the disturbance started when a 23-year-old male inmate was asleep in his cell and another male inmate, 45 years of age, entered his cell and began to stab him with some type of sharp object. A number of other inmates saw what was happening and attacked the 45-year-old man. When police arrived, the disturbance was over and all parties involved had been separated. As a result of this altercation, the 45-year-old inmate and the 23-year-old inmate were both taken to hospital. The 23-year-old man sustained numerous lacerations but none were life threatening. The 45-year-old man sustained several stab wounds and other serious injuries but none are believed to be life-threatening. They both remain in the hospital at this time. Investigators in the Halifax Regional Police/RCMP Criminal Investigation Division are continuing their investigation into this matter.
