Wednesday, May 21, 2014 (Halifax, NS) – Spring has arrived and that means many of us are starting to think about gardening. Residents are encouraged to learn from the experts themselves at the Halifax Regional Municipality’s annual greenhouse open house.

This year the event is being held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 24, at the greenhouse at 5711 Sackville St.

The municipality cultivates most of the plants and flowers for its more than 400 parks and open spaces at its own greenhouses in Halifax and Dartmouth. Horticulture employees work throughout the spring to complete a large-scale planting program for annuals and do regular maintenance throughout the summer and fall to ensure the municipal parks and open spaces are vibrant and welcoming for all to enjoy.

At the open house residents will be able to explore the greenhouse, check out the educational displays and ask municipal gardeners for their best gardening tips. There will be members of the Friends of the Public Gardens and urban tree arborists on site, as well as an expert on waste management and recycling who can speak about sorting your trash.
