Tomorrow will mark the anniversaries of the homicides of Daniel Newman in 2008 and John Newcombe in 2012, and the Halifax Regional Police/RCMP Integrated Major Crime Unit continues to investigate.

On June 1, 2008, at 3:30 a.m., officers responded to a call behind the YMCA on Gottingen Street in Halifax and located 65-year-old Daniel Martin Newman deceased as a result of stabbing injuries. The investigation revealed that a number of people were present at the time Mr. Newman was stabbed. Those individuals may have vital information about this homicide that would assist investigators in moving this case forward. This case was also added to the Nova Scotia Department of Justice Rewards for Major Unsolved Crimes Program today.

On June 1, 2012, at 2:08 a.m., Halifax Regional Police responded to a report of a shooting at Winston's bar at 278 Lacewood Drive in Halifax. Upon arrival, officers located 27-year-old John Fulton Newcombe on the sidewalk, and he was pronounced deceased at the scene. An autopsy confirmed he died as a result of injuries sustained from having been shot. The investigation indicates that Mr. Newcombe had just left Winston's bar when he was shot in the parking lot and that the shooter fled through a walkway towards Willett Street where he was picked up by a vehicle. Police believe that Mr. Newcombe was the intended target of the shooting and this was not a random incident.

Investigators would like to speak with anyone who has not yet spoken with police and who was at Winston’s bar earlier in the evening on May 31, 2012 or who may have witnessed an altercation between Mr. Newcombe and several males outside the bar.

Anyone with information on either incident is asked to call police at (902) 490-5333. Anonymous tips can be sent to Crime Stoppers by calling toll-free 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), submitting a secure web tip at www.crimestoppers.ns.ca or texting a tip - Tip 202 + your message to 274637.
