Today we learned of a decision by the Police Review Board in a matter involving one of our officers.
The matter before the Board related to a public complaint we received from two citizens about a traffic stop in September 2015, which we investigated. Through the investigation, HRP found that a disciplinary default had occurred and the officer was demoted as a result (this information was included as part of the Police Review Board hearing, rendering it public).
The officer exercised his right to appeal the disciplinary default to the Police Review Board, an independent body outside of the police service, which reports to the Office of the Police Complaints Commissioner for the province. The Police Review Board held a public hearing and as a result accepted the officer’s appeal and ruled that no disciplinary default had taken place. Under the Police Act of Nova Scotia, a decision of the Police Review Board is final.
We have reached out to the officer to advise him that his rank will be reinstated, effective immediately.
