UPDATE - February 26

Owner of money located

Halifax Regional Police has located the owner of the money that was found in Dartmouth earlier this year.

On February 9, officers responded to a Dartmouth thrift store after an employee located several thousands of dollars hidden inside a bundle of folded drapes. The money was contained within several sealed envelopes and the information inside indicated that the money would have been withdrawn in 2006 from a Guysborough County bank. A media release was issued on February 13 in an attempt to locate the owner.

Earlier this month, a woman contacted police and advised that she had donated the personal belongings of a loved one who passed away in January 2015 to charity. Investigators were able to verify through the woman and the bank that the money belonged to the person who had passed away. The money has since been turned over to the next of kin.

We extend our sincere thanks to the employee of the Dartmouth thrift store who found the money and did the right thing by turning it over to police so that it could be returned to the rightful owner.

Halifax Regional Police thanks the media and the public for their assistance in this matter.

Halifax Regional Police is requesting the public’s assistance finding the owner of a large sum of money found in Dartmouth earlier this week.

On February 9, officers responded to a Dartmouth thrift store after an employee located several thousands of dollars hidden inside a bundle of folded drapes. The money was contained within several sealed envelopes and the information inside indicates that the money would have been withdrawn in 2006 from a Guysborough County bank. Officers followed-up with the bank, but given the time since the withdrawal, it was not possible to obtain more information on the owner. It is believed that the drapes were donated sometime in January 2015 in Nova Scotia but it is impossible to determine where the donation was made as the store buys donated material in bulk.

The owner or anyone with information regarding the owner is asked to contact Halifax Regional Police at 902-490-5016. In order to claim the money, the person must be able to specify the amount of money and in what denominations, and the bank or bank account number.
