Wednesday, June 29, 2016 (Halifax, NS) - The Halifax Regional Municipality is advising residents of the following municipal program and service level adjustments for Canada Day, Friday, July 1:
Solid Waste Collection and Facility Hours:
No municipal solid waste collection services will take place on Canada Day, Friday, July 1. Curbside collection of garbage, organics or recyclables normally scheduled for Friday, July 1, will occur instead the next day, Saturday, July 2. Residents are reminded that collection services can begin as early as 7 a.m.; to ensure pick-up, residents may place materials curbside the evening prior to collection day.
The Otter Lake Waste Management Facility, the Halifax recycling facility and municipal composting facilities will be closed on Friday, July 1, but will be open for regular operating hours on Saturday, July 2.
The Household Special Waste Depot in Bayers Lake will be closed on Saturday, July 2, and will re-open for regular operating hours on Saturday, July 9. There will also be a Mobile Household Special Waste Drop-off Event on Saturday, July 9, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the BMO Centre parking lot, 61 Gary Martin Drive, Bedford.
Summer weekly green cart pick-up for residential curbside collection begins on Saturday, July 2 and extends until Wednesday, August 31. This extended curbside service will be in effect for all areas of the municipality for the aforementioned dates. Halifax Transit Bus and Ferry Services:
Alderney and Woodside ferry service is free on Canada Day, July 1, and will operate on the following schedules:
Alderney Ferry: 7:30 a.m. to 2 a.m. Woodside Ferry: 6:37 a.m. to 11:07 p.m.
Ferry passengers are encouraged to bring a food or monetary donation in lieu of fare payment to support FEED NOVA SCOTIA.
Halifax Transit buses will be operating on holiday service on Canada Day, Friday, July 1. For detailed holiday schedules by individual bus route, visit www.halifax.ca/transit/Schedules/index.php.
Recreation Facilities, Programs and Services:
Municipal beaches and the outdoor pools at the Halifax Common and Bedford (Shore Drive) officially open to the public on Friday, July 1. There are a variety of beaches across the Halifax region, many of which are supervised by trained lifeguards, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. The majority of other municipally-operated recreation facilities will be closed on Canada Day, Friday, July 1. Residents are advised to call ahead to their respective facility for operating hours and program information. Parking:
On-street parking meter spaces are free on Canada Day, Friday, July 1, however motorists are reminded to abide by other posted signage such as no-parking zones.
311 Citizen Contact Centres:
The 311 Call Centre will be operating on regular hours, 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., on Canada Day, Friday, July 1. The five Customer Service Centres that provide in-person access to municipal services and payments will be closed on Friday, July 1, re-opening for regular business hours on Monday, July 4.
