Municipal Services on Canada Day, July 1

Monday, June 29, 2015 (Halifax, NS) – The Halifax Regional Municipality is advising residents of the following service levels in effect on Canada Day, Wednesday, July 1:

Solid Waste Collection and Facility Hours: No municipal solid waste collection services on Canada Day, Wednesday, July 1. Curbside collection of garbage, organics or recyclables normally scheduled for Wednesday will occur instead on the following Saturday, July 4.

Note: Weekly curbside green cart collection begins for all municipal residents on Thursday, July 2, and will be in effect each week in July and August. Collection services can begin as early as 7 a.m.; to ensure collection, residents may place materials curbside the evening prior to collection day.   The Otter Lake Waste Management Facility, the Halifax Recycling Plant and municipal composting facilities will be closed on Canada Day, Wednesday, July 1, but will be open for regular hours on Saturday, July 4. The residential Household Special Waste (HSW) Depot located at 20 Horseshoe Lake Dr. will be closed on Saturday, July 4, and will re-open on Saturday, July 11, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information on solid waste collection schedules, and upcoming program changes including clear bags for garbage, visit www.halifax.ca/clear.

Halifax Transit Bus and Ferry Service: Halifax Transit buses will be operating on holiday schedules on Canada Day, July 1. For detailed holiday schedules by individual route, visit www.halifax.ca/transit/Schedules/index.php. Regular fare payment will apply.

The Alderney and Woodside ferries will operate for free all day on Canada Day. Visit www.halifax.ca/transit/CanadaDayFerryService.php for detailed Canada Day ferry schedules. In lieu of fare payment, passengers are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food or monetary donation in support of FEED NOVA SCOTIA.

Please note the Alderney Park & Ride lot will be closed as of 12:01 a.m. Tuesday, June 30 and will reopen at 6 a.m., Thursday, July 2, to accommodate the outdoor Canada Day concert event at Alderney Landing. Monthly Park & Ride pass holders can use the overflow lot during this time, located on Geary Street off of Shore Road. 

Recreation Facilities, Programs and Services: The majority of recreation facilities will be closed on Canada Day. Please contact your individual facility in advance for more details on operating hours.

Parking: On-street parking meter spaces are free on Canada Day, however motorists must abide by other posted signage.

311 Citizen Contact Centres: The 311 Call Centre will operate on regular hours, 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., on Canada Day, July 1. The five Customer Service Centres that provide in-person access to municipal services and payments will be closed on Canada Day, July 1, and re-open for regular business hours on Thursday, July 2.
