Friday, Feb. 20, 2015 (Halifax, NS) - The Halifax Regional Municipality is advising residents that snow and ice clearing operations continue at this time and crews will be gearing up once again this weekend to manage forecasted snow and rain for Sunday.
Snow clearing and salting operations on streets and sidewalks continues today following a winter storm in our region last night that deposited an additional 8-10 cm of snow.
Mixed precipitation is forecasted for the next 36 to 48 hours. Rainfall on Sunday may create flooding issues in some areas. Crews cleared catch basins overnight and will continue with this work through Saturday to enable drainage of melting snow throughout the city. Salt application and scraping of residential streets and sidewalks will also continue tomorrow in an effort to melt the remaining ice pack.
Crews will ramp up 24-hour operations again on Saturday night with a continued focus on opening up catch basins, and clearing streets and sidewalks as needed throughout the day Sunday.
Municipal and contracted crews have been working around-the clock for the past three weeks, to clear and treat roads and sidewalks throughout the municipality despite very challenging conditions. The municipality recognizes how frustrating the past few weeks have been for commuters, particularly those with mobility issues, and we appreciate residents’ patience. Mobility, visibility and ultimately safety for all residents remain our primary focus.
The municipality has lifted enforcement of the overnight winter parking ban until further notice.
Please note temporary No Parking signage is in place on select streets in the Halifax region where it is particularly difficult for local traffic, buses and emergency service providers to navigate around parked vehicles. This step is often taken during the winter months and is permitted under Section 151 of the Motor Vehicle Act. Motorists are advised to obey these restrictions or risk being ticketed or towed.
Residents should monitor local weather forecasts, and can stay informed on the status of the parking ban online at www.halifax.ca/snow or sign up for alerts to your phone or email. Sign up online at www.halifax.ca/snow/ParkingBan, email firstname.lastname@example.org or call 311. Residents should note that the online registration page is currently not compatible with CHROME web browsers and is not accessible through your smartphone; please use either Internet Explorer or Firefox on a desktop computer. The municipality apologizes for any inconvenience this may cause.
