The Halifax Regional Municipality is encouraging residents to observe Emancipation Day on August 1.
The Province of Nova Scotia officially designated August 1 as Emancipation Day, in recognition of the history and impacts of slavery in our region.
As this year marks the inaugural celebration in Halifax, the municipality will be joining others across our region to observe this special and important day. Some events scheduled for the week include:
Official Proclamation by the Mayor on behalf of Regional Council - Tuesday, July 27
Emancipation and Liberation: Where Do We Go From Here? Featuring Dr. Afua Cooper - Wednesday, July 28 from 6-8 p.m.
Raising of the Pan-African Flag at Grand Parade - Friday, July 30 at 10 a.m.
An evening variety show to celebrate Emancipation Day hosted by GameChangers902 in partnership with Civic Events and the Office of Diversity and Inclusion/ANSAIO - Sunday, August 1, 6-9 p.m. at Grand Parade
Celebrating Emancipation Day will provide us with an opportunity to maintain ongoing meaningful dialogue around race relations and inclusive society.

La Municipalité régionale d’©Halifax encourage les résidents à observer le Jour de l’émancipation, le 1er août.
La province de la Nouvelle-Écosse a officiellement fait du 1er août le Jour de l’émancipation, en reconnaissance de l’histoire et des répercussions de l’esclavage dans notre région.
Comme cette année marque la célébration inaugurale à Halifax, la municipalité se joindra à d’autres intervenants de la région pour observer cette journée spéciale et importante. Voici quelques événements prévus pour la semaine :
Proclamation officielle par le maire au nom du Conseil régional – le mardi 27 juillet
Emancipation and Liberation: Where Do We Go From Here? (Émancipation et libération : et maintenant, où allons-nous?) Avec la participation de la Dre Afua Cooper – le mercredi 28 juillet, de 18 h à 20 h.
Lever du drapeau panafricain à Grand Parade – le vendredi 30 juillet à 10 h
En soirée, un spectacle de variété destiné à célébrer le Jour de l’émancipation, organisé par GameChangers902 en partenariat avec Civic Events et le Bureau de la diversité et de l’inclusion/ANSAIO – le dimanche 1er août, de 18 h à 21 h, à Grand Parade
La célébration du Jour de l’émancipation nous donnera l’occasion de maintenir un dialogue constructif sur les relations raciales et la société inclusive.
