Thursday, Nov. 19, 2015 (Halifax, NS) – A new flagpole is being installed today in Grand Parade Square at Halifax City Hall, replacing the existing, aging flagpole which dates back to 1947.

The flagpole replacement was prompted following a condition assessment that determined the flagpole base and structure had severely deteriorated and should be removed for safety reasons. Additionally, it has been recognized that the size and location of the flagpole was out of scale with the design of Grand Parade Square, and was not conducive to larger special event programming.

Over the past month, a contractor has been preparing the new flagpole location in the north east corner of Grand Parade Square in front of City Hall. The site has been prepped and the new flagpole will be installed today.

The existing flagpole and guidewires are scheduled to be taken down on Sunday, Nov. 22, weather permitting, with the old concrete base to be removed within the next few weeks.

The municipality thanks residents in advance for their patience and cooperation as this work is completed over the coming days.
