Friday, Sept. 5, 2014 (Halifax, NS) – North Park Street in Halifax will reopen to traffic on Sunday, Sept. 7, however, motorists are advised to drive carefully as construction on a new roundabout will continue through September and October.

On the same day, Agricola and Cunard streets will be closed to vehicle traffic until further notice at the intersection with North Park Street.

Agricola will be shut down between Woodill Street and Cunard, while Cunard will be closed between Maynard Street and North Park. Local traffic will be able to access those blocks during the closure.

There will be signage posted in the neighbourhood and traffic personnel will be on site to assist if people have questions. However, to help reduce problems, motorists are urged to plan ahead now to find alternative routes while this work is going on.

For pedestrians, there will be intermittent sidewalk closures throughout this second stage of work. The active transportation path on the Halifax Common will remain fully accessible at this stage, and pedestrians and cyclists are urged to use that trail when travelling through the area.

Crews will accommodate pedestrian access to local businesses. As part of this, there is a street-level walkway coming soon that will allow cyclists and pedestrians to travel across North Park Street in front of the Halifax Armoury to connect to the trail system on the Common. This walkway will be a permanent fixture once the roundabout is complete.

The municipality appreciates the public’s patience and cooperation, and apologizes for any inconvenience these closures and the ongoing construction may cause.

As the North Park Street area remains an active construction site, motorists are reminded to heed posted speed limits and other construction zone signage, and to keep an eye out for construction workers.

This is a two-year project, beginning with construction of the roundabout at Cunard Street, which is expected to open later this fall. The second roundabout at the intersection of North Park, Cogswell, Rainnie, Trollope and Ahern streets will be built in 2015.
