In their continued effort to address road safety and educate citizens on the rules of the road, the HRP/RCMP Integrated Traffic Unit is focusing on school bus safety during the month of October.

Police would like to remind motorists that it is illegal to pass a school bus from either direction when red lights are flashing regardless of the number of lanes of traffic. The initial fine for this offence is $399.91 and six points on your driver’s license. Failing to proceed with caution when passing a school bus exhibiting flashing amber lights could also result in a $284.91 fine

Police will be stepping up enforcement in relation to these complaints and motorists are asked to do their part by obeying these laws. This will help make it is safer for children going to and coming from school. Anyone who witnesses an infraction is encouraged to report it to police at 490-5016. We thank citizens for helping to keep our streets safe in HRM.

The traffic safety theme in September focused on monitoring school zones and crosswalk safety. The unit monitored and enforced reduced speed limits in school zones, illegal passing of school buses as well as numerous traffic check points at or near schools and handing out school bus safety pamphlets. During the month, a total of 1,535 Summary Offence Tickets were issued for a variety of offences.
