Update - September 22, 2013 (11:57 a.m.)As a result of the investigation into the stabbing of a Halifax Regional Police Officer, 31-year-old Alexander Welch of Halifax was remanded to the Central Nova Scotia Correctional Facility to attend Halifax Provincial court on Monday September 23, 2013. Mr. Welch has been charged with attempted murder, assault of a police officer, assault with a weapon and aggravated assault.
Update - September 21, 2013 (4:49 a.m.)The 31 year old male suspect is still in police custody and will be attending Halifax Provincial Court on Monday September 23, 2013 to face a number of charges including attempt murder, aggravated assault and assaulting a police officer. The officer who was stabbed has been released from hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.
Officer Injured - September 21, 2103 (10:35 p.m.)A Halifax Regional Police (HRP) officer was injured following an incident earlier tonight in Halifax.
At 8:27 p.m., two officers attended the Metro Turning Point located at 2170 Barrington Street to arrest a 31-year-old man wanted on an arrest warrant. The suspect fled on foot when he noticed the officers and a short foot pursuit ensued. As one of the officers caught up with the suspect, the suspect stabbed the officer in the neck and forearm with a knife. A Conductive Energy Weapon (CEW) was deployed to gain control of the suspect. The suspect is currently in custody and the knife was recovered.
The officer, who has been with HRP for 6 years, was transported to hospital by EHS with knife wounds. He was conscious and speaking with other officers when he arrived in hospital. He was treated for his injuries; he is in stable condition and recovering in hospital with his family by his side.
Investigators with the HRP/RCMP Integrated General Investigation Section are currently investigating the incident; charges against the suspect are anticipated.
